2020 end of year recap - writing

How many words (or fics or chapters) did you write this year? my regular AO3 word count is a little off, because 7,112 words are from pod_together, which i did not write, and then i posted some chatfic (5,356 words, 2,706 words, and 7,749 words), so uhhh some of these words are mine? but not all of them? so i’m not counting them here. and then i also posted a few things on tumblr, so what i’m prepared to say is my final word count is 64,145 words!
Fandom you wrote the most for? DC comics! with 9 fics published on ao3. for completeness, i also published 3 hockey fics and 3 hockey chatfics on ao3, 2 mdzs fics on ao3 and 3 mdzs fics/chatfics on tumblr, 1 far sector fic for yuletide (which is sort of dc but also not), and 1 critrole fic.
Shortest fic? What’s it about? the short wwx-in-space ficlet i posted on tumblr for remi!
Longest fic? What’s it about? we don’t cheat at all, the claude/tanger cisswap lesbians asg au that i’ve been working on for three years and FINALLY finished
Most popular fic (however you measure that)? by far, give thanks to the broken bones, the bruce and dick fic i wrote for a multifandom gen exchange, which is most popular by hits, kudos, and bookmarks. extra shoutout to see my other side, my fic about why jason wears a bat logo, which i posted on tumblr and got 500+ notes on, something that’s never happened to me before.
Fic you wish more people read? it’s not actually a fic, which is probably why, but the fandom zine! i was really proud of managing to pull that off, and i think the pieces that we ended up with were really interesting
Hardest fic to write? i mean. as previously mention in my TWENTY-EIGHTEEN wrap up, we don’t cheat at all has been in the works for a long damn time and was a struggle so i’m really proud that i finally managed to get it done
Easiest fic to write? i tend to write short fics with one or two scene bc my best way to write is get an idea and immediately and furiously write all of it start to finish, so a lot of these were pretty easy. i’ll go with let my imagination run away, though, because that was like… lightning strike out of the blue of inspiration and i wrote it the same day i got the idea. i still have some doubts about this fic because i think it’s very easy for me as an american/westerner to flatten out a lot of cultural nuances in mdzs fandom and i actually didn’t publish this fic at first bc i knew i hadn’t bothered with any attempt at not making this a very western modern au (other than some research into current cultural attitudes towards tattoos in china), which is the other reason it’s getting the mildly not complimentary ‘easiest fic to write’ award
Your favorite scene you wrote this year? mmmm i’m gonna list two, for fun. in treasure where you feel ruined, the conversation between wei wuxian and wen ning where wen ning dunks them abruptly into emotional honesty, because i love wen ning getting to actually say things and express feelings, and i also love wei wuxian having to tell people how he feels. and then, the scene in tired of waiting for tomorrow to come where steph shows up in jason’s home, because i actually love steph and jason together and i think they’d be great friends, but sometimes people you care about say things that just hit you exactly wrong, and it was a good situation to dig into a little.
Your favorite character you wrote this year? wei wuxian. writing wei wuxian is a fucking delight, i just kind of start typing and don’t bother thinking at all. i actually wrote a lot of (in)vertebrate necromancy out loud as a voice memo, and i edited the narration quite a bit and added a lot of feelings from lan wangji, but wei wuxian’s parts are almost verbatim what i rambled out loud.
Your favorite writing song inspiration? wreck on the highway by bruce springsteen made me write basically a songfic with nobody there but me. i was just completely obsessed with that song for like four days straight.
Your favorite fandom event you participated in this year? i did. so many fucking events this year oh god. writing-wise, remi and i did our personal exchange, i organized the fandom zine, i wrote for the gen freeform exchange, i participated in Lower your Damn Standards, i wrote for remixapod, i wrote for the mdzs/cql rare pair exchange, and i wrote for yuletide! remixapod is still my favorite, especially since people got even more creative this year and it was SO fucking cool to see all the different works that came out of it. (hmmm i wonder if there’s more that i could read now that i’m into mdzs…)
Which fic required the most research? if it takes all night (that’ll be alright) not because it really needed it, strictly speaking, but because i read two volumes of superman for it in addition to rereading the grayson annual like four times.
A trope/ship you wrote for the first time this year and ended up loving?
i wrote in second person for i greet all the new ones that are coming in green for the first time and it was actually incredibly fun. i really want to try it out again!
Favorite fic you didn’t write? gonna take this opportunity to yell about a whole bunch of miscellaneous stuff from this past year: a) the critical role/mdzs fusion i want to make as an outline post on tumblr, wherein jester is the cheerful demonic cultivator; b) the gen batfam omegaverse au remi and i came up with which i’m determined to do SOMETHING with because i love our weird omegaverse worldbuilding and also gen omegaverse; c) i really wanna write something about my first dnd character, which is something i’ve thought about for years but have never done, although i do have some ideas of what she did "post canon" now; d) i have a whole series outlined about cass and each other member of the batfam and dancing, so maybe someday i’ll write at least one of those; e) remi and i had a chatfic for a while about yeeting post-canon jiang cheng into the past which ended up being everyone heisting their future selves into the past to fix everything and is full of wild mood swings between selfcest, shenanigans, and angst

Your current number of WIPs? mmm 4 that i’ve written something for in the last several months. the main ones are the long mdzs au i mentioned below, the [redacted] fic remi and i are writing as a late yuletide treat (which we’ve only discussed and not actually started), and the mdzs HOA au.
Writing hope/goal for next year? finish the long mdzs au i started several months ago! it will almost definitely end up being the longest thing i've written once i finish it, too. i actually do have a fandom to-do list, and now that i’m done with all my exchanges/commitments, i’m excited to dive back into some of my other projects i’d started earlier in 2020.
