one of the challenges in this round of Voiceteam is to record audio commentary on a podfic, so i decided it would be fun to do it on the podtogether i was part of last year! much like the not-fic i recorded, i am mildly embarrassed and not at all surprised at how much i talk when i am given a mic and free rein lol: this is fully 25 minutes of added commentary interspersed into an originally ~45 minute podfic.

a link to the ao3 post for the podtogether!

some additional things i referenced while talking, or got wrong in my commentary, or just wanted to add for fun!

a link to the website that lists when specific tracks on the soundtrack are used in Shadow and Bone! no idea if it's accurate, or if it's good for other shows but the idea is extremely helpful for me, because even when i HAVE seen a show, i'm terrrrible at recognizing instrumental music unless it's like. john williams theme songs level of distinctive.

i love how i was like 'this battle scene at the end is the first time we'd had a section break' when there's literally one in SESSION ONE [facepalm]. anyway

i found my google doc of the script where i'd made notes about music/sfx after i recorded my commentary! so here's the probably final list of what music is used in each scene of the podfic:

  • Session One: Hearth Inn from Tabletop Audio
  • Session One, part two: Waiting Time from Tabletop Audio
  • Session Seventeen: The Tree When We Sat Once from Witcher 3 and this campfire noise from Freesound
  • Session Thirty-Nine: Russian Winter from Tabletop Audio
  • Session Forty-Six: Field of Heroes from Tabletop Audio. wish this one didn't have a question mark in my notes but here we are
  • Session Forty-Seven: Ice Dragon from Tabletop Audio
  • Session Forty-Seven, part two: Volatile Reaction by Kevin MacLeod
  • Session Forty-Seven, part three: Cry Havoc from Tabletop Audio. again, wish there wasn't a question mark here
  • End: Just Ask from Shadow and Bone soundtrack

I had a separate Audacity project from the main podfic to combine just the packing up foley. it's not actually as complicated as it looks: the top, named tracks are the original audio files cut into pieces, and then the unnamed ones below are where i rearranged and overlapped the various sounds, and then Mix at the end is the final mixed down version of the unnamed ones above.

A screenshot of an Audacity project titled packing up. about a minute and a half of audio clips are visible, in ten tracks.

last and, uh, probably also least lol, here is a compilation of the critical role cast singing along to the battle music.
